MARQUETTE -- Turning trash into treasure.  That's what one Upper Peninsula native, with help from women in Thailand, is doing.

Co-director of Thai Song, Brittany Fox, is teaching women in Bangkok how to crochet handbags using the plastic from recycled garbage.

The process is extensive.  Each bag takes 12 to 16 hours to clean, sort, and crochet the recycled material.

The organization works to provide women in Thailand employment with a flexible schedule.

"The biggest joy and the thing that we're looking for the most for our women is to see them empowered and to see them believe that they can make a difference for their family in the future," said Fox.

Economic and social freedom for women in Thailand is
Thai Song's ultimate goal.
