Soo Locks complex also will be open to the public
SAULT STE. MARIE (AP) -- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is offering the chance see the Soo Locks up close.
People may walk across the walls of the locks Friday in Sault Ste. Marie as part of Soo Locks Engineer's Day.
The Soo Locks raise and lower ships on the St. Mary's River, linking Lake Superior and Lake Huron.
For Engineer's Day, some other parts of the Soo Locks complex also will be open to the public.
The locks are a vital gateway for freighters hauling iron ore, coal and other raw materials to port cities such as Detroit and Cleveland.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers oversees the Soo Locks.
