Republicans propose using part of the surplus to fund other programs
LANSING (AP) -- The Michigan Education Association says it expects a large crowd for its rally at the state Capitol.
Teachers, parents, and others are expected to attend Thursday's event, called to promote public education funding. The MEA has held events across the state building up to the rally aimed at state lawmakers who are debating budget issues and other legislation related to school finances.
Schools appear safe from future budget cuts because there is a surplus in the state's school aid fund. Republicans propose using part of the surplus to fund other programs, but some key Democrats oppose that plan.
The MEA is in court fighting a requirement that school employees begin paying three percent of their salaries toward retiree health care.
