Techniques to decrease or avoid charges to accounts
MARQUETTE -- The first of 19 employer seminars across the state launched Tuesday in Marquette, hosted by the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency.
The session aimed to give area employers insight on how unemployment insurance taxes are calculated and, in turn, charged to their accounts. They also are discussing techniques to decrease or avoid charges to accounts and advice for getting improper charges removed.
One possible federal unemployment tax revision may cause an increase in taxes for some employers.
"There could be an increase in the solvency tax for those employers that had a negative balance; in other words, paid out more in unemployment benefits than paid in in taxes," said Neil Zechman, Unemployment Insurance Agency.
The next seminar will take place Wednesday at Michigan Tech University in Houghton. For more information and a list of all the seminars, visit Michigan.gov .
