The annual Bike Rodeo and Uncommon Bike Tour
MARQUETTE -- The weather was not the best for biking on Saturday, but it didn't stop many from coming out to the annual kids Bike Rodeo and the Uncommon Bike Tour.
The bike rodeo has been a regular feature in Marquette for over 20 years and is geared toward safety for kids and adults. The Marquette City Police put on the Bike Rodeo offering registration checks. The Upper Peninsula Partnership For Safety gives young people free bike helmets if they need one. For those with a helmet, it's a chance to make sure they're wearing it correctly.
Bikers could also take part in an obstacle course, learn the rules of the road, and compete in a stand-off balance event sponsored Dunham's Sports. This event has grown over the years, and officials can see the results on the road. Marquette Police Officer Jackie Sweeney says, "It's great to start young and set a precedence right away when they're first starting to ride, that way in the future they can tell their kids and their friends."
The Uncommon Bike Tour runs in conjunction with the rodeo. It's for families to ride at their own pace on a 10-mile paved course around Marquette.
