He was accused of illegally distributing drugs

MARQUETTE -- A Kingsford dentist charged with 50 counts of illegally distributing drugs has reached a plea agreement.

Dr. Robert D'Amour will plead guilty to one count of prescribing medication outside the usual course of professional practice and for no legitimate medical purpose.  The 49 other counts will be dismissed.

He will be sentenced September 13 in federal court in Marquette.

The charge carries a maximum of five years in prison, but under the plea agreement, the sentence will not exceed 18 months in prison.

According to defense attorney Trent Stupak, the resolution will allow Dr. D'Amour to continue his dental practice, but there will be a separate process that will determine the future of his medical license.
