Students in Powers volunteer for an afternoon

POWERS -- North Central students may not have been in the classroom recently, but they got their daily dose of learning.  Instead of the usual lesson plan, it was a day to learn how to help others.  It's called Community Project Day and it's become an annual event for the school.

"It's really nice to have the community support, and so we love to show them our thanks.  It's always great to show them where their tax money is going and how much we really appreciate what they're doing for us, and it's just a great way to help out our community and the place that we live," says junior Elizabeth Gorzinksi.

Students in grades 7-12 spend the day volunteering around the town.  This group of students is spending the afternoon at the baseball field.  They're sanding and painting the bleachers, cleaning the dugout, and repairing some of the equipment.  And it's jobs like this that are needed around the community.

"This year the Powers Hermansville Little League, we have 38 players in the 7 and 8 and 9 and 10-year-old groups.  In past years we've had at most 15, so we have a lot more involvement in the fields, getting used to a lot more.  There's a lot of work that needs to be done on the field just to make it safe," explains volunteer Mike Snyder.

For the volunteers, it was rewarding to see the reaction from members of the community.

"They like us.  They think that it's an influence on the other kids...a positive influence," describes junior Tylor Demeuse.
