It was a quiet event that allowed time for many to reflect on Marquette's unique history

MARQUETTE -- It was a brisk but beautiful morning on the shore of Founders Landing.  About 50 people came to celebrate the 161st anniversary of Marquette’s founders rowing to shore.

"I know no one wants to wake up before the sunrise,” said Frida Waara, coordinator for the event, “but if you're going to wake up and watch that sunrise any day of the year, May 18th is the perfect time to do it."

The celebration included a reenactment of Peter White, Robert Graveraet, and their crew arriving by boat to meet Chief Charles Kawbawgam.  A major part of today’s event was dedicated to celebrating the rich history of Native Americans.

"They call it Founders Day, but really the founders of Marquette were already here, those Ojibwa," Waara said.

Activities later in the afternoon focused on teaching the public the heritage of Native Americans.  After the reenactment, students had the opportunity to make a simple basket as well as a medicine wheel medallion.  Native American blessings during the reenactment also honored their rituals.

"Our traditional language is actually a prayer language that teaches of the circle of life,” said actor Glen Bressette, “and how to talk to the spirit of what each item in this world is about."

For some of the actors, bringing the history lesson to students was a way to help them understand and preserve the rich history and beauty of Marquette.

Actor Jim Edwards said, "I think you have to understand where you come from in order to make good decisions about stepping forward."
