Second graders learned all about their local history

NEGAUNEE -- Aspen Ridge second graders got a taste of local history on Friday afternoon.

One hundred students spent the day touring the DeVos Art Museum, the Marquette lighthouse, and areas of the Old Towne Heritage Trail in Negaunee.  This is the first year the students have learned about the local history, and teachers hoped it would be worthwhile.

"We've discussed quite a bit about mining and the heritage that we have because of the mining and the different things.  The historical events that have happened in Ishpeming and the immigrants...we wanted them to see where the people lived and how they lived.  We want them to see the mines and how the mines were," explains second grade teacher Cindy Poupore.

Teachers hope to show off the history of downtown Ishpeming in the next couple of weeks.
