Work is being done to replenish the population
ESCANABA -- Officials say the walleye population in the Bays de Noc has dropped about two-thirds since the '90s. However, work is being done to replenish the population.
The Chamber of Commerce, the Bay de Noc Great Lakes Sports Fishing Association, local tribes, along with the DNRE are working to restore the walleye population. Officials believe illegal fishing, predatory birds, and other environmental issues have caused the population to drop. Currently the groups are working to get local governmental support.
Thursday night, the Escanaba City Council passed a resolution of support for the project.
"We're hoping that we can restore the fish population to the 1990 levels within a three-year period, but that requires action now. We need to plant the fish, rear the fish, get the fish planted now," said Paul Storm, Associate Attorney, Founder.
Funding for the project is already coming in. The Hannahville Indian Community recently donated a $10,000 grant toward the project.
