CHAMPION -- Van Riper State Park in Champion has set a new record for April occupancy.

The park normally doesn't open until the first weekend in May, but the unusually warm weather has allowed them to open early.  Over the past month, Van Riper has seen between 30 and 40 groups already vacationing in the park.

Crews were out on Thursday cleaning debris left over from the winter in anticipation of a busy spring and summer.

"Clean up all the dead leaves and pick up branches and just get the park ready.  We already have the showers open, so we already have the water samples in and everything's ready to go.  So, this was kind of an amazing year for us," said Doug Barry, Park Supervisor.

The park is featuring a new cabin this year which just opened toward the end of last season.  It overlooks Lake Michigamme and goes for $80 a night.

Barry says the cabins are renting out quickly.
