Secured money from the national park service entry fee fund last January
KEWEENAW -- The Keweenaw National Historical Park could lose more than $100,000 in funding if the Department of Transportation doesn't approve a park-wide signage plan.
The park applied for individual permits to put up about 40 signs directing drivers to 19 different heritage sites located throughout the Keweenaw. The park has been working on the plan for the past two years and secured money from the national park service entry fee fund last January.
The DOT rejected all but two of the permits, meaning the park will lose the money if it's not used by the end of the year.
"We'd like to work with them and ask them to either reconsider looking at this as a distinct system or look at modifying our sign request so they meet all of the needs of the DOT," said Jim Corless, KNHP Superintendent.
Sign size was a common problem with the rejected permits.
The park hopes to rework the designs and save the money.
