SANDS TOWNSHIP -- A fire all but destroyed a Sands Township home Friday morning.

When firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were pouring out of the home at 982 Marquette County Road 480.  The fire appeared to have started toward the back in the family room area.

Dick and Carolyn Anderson were just about to get up around 8 a.m. Friday when they noticed their dog, Duke, acting very strange.  When Dick went to see what was wrong, he saw the fire in the back of the house.

Dick and Carolyn, along with Duke and their cat, all got out of the house safely.  The fire, however, spread fast and got into the home's roof.  Damage is extensive due to the fire, smoke, and water.

The Anderson's home was insured.  There's no word yet on what caused the fire and a damage estimate was not yet available.

Sands Township firefighters had help from Chocolay and Marquette Townships, along with County Rescue Unit 131.
