MUNISING -- After five years of planning, construction is beginning for the new police and fire station in Munising.
The current building has been in use since 1939 and is no longer suitable for either group.
City officials met Wednesday for the official groundbreaking ceremony.
The $1.5 million facility will be located on Mill Street and is exactly what the city needs.
"It will mean our fire trucks will be properly housed, our police department and fire department will have a state of the art facility which will allow them to do a better job or protecting and preserving the City of Munising and it's residents," said Rod DesJardins, Mayor.
The building is expected to be completed by late summer, with both the police and fire departments moving in during the early fall.
