LANSING -- A proposal in the State Legislature would lengthen term limits to give lawmakers up to 12 years in each chamber.
Michigan now allows House members to serve no more than six years or three two-year terms.
Senators are limited to eight years or two four-year terms.
The proposal detailed Wednesday by Democratic Rep. Mark Meadows of East Lansing would change the state constitution to lengthen single House terms to four years and Senate terms to six years. Current term limits for the governor, attorney general, and secretary of state--two four-year terms each--would not change under the proposal.
The proposal also would require candidates for attorney general and secretary of state to be chosen through primary elections instead of at state conventions.
