HOUGHTON -- A Houghton developer has purchased the city's old fire hall from Michigan Tech and hopes to turn it into a new hangout for students and the rest of the community.
Crews were already on-site today, working to expose the basic structural components so that partners, Jonathan Julien and Thomas and Adam Yeoman, can finalize their design.
The trio plans to completely renovate the nearly 130-year-old building and reopen it as a public entertainment venue by next fall.
"I think there's a need to bring more students into the downtown district, especially some of the younger first, second year students. We're trying to get them off campus and into the community more, and this will help do that," said Jonathan Julien, LJJ Construction.
It's extremely important to the partners to preserve the historical building's exterior design. They're even asking for any artifacts people may have to include in their renovations.
