CHIPPEWA COUNTY -- A five-year-old girl is dead after a weekend snowmobile crash in Chippewa County.

According to the Bay Mills law enforcement, it happened on Lakshore Drive west of Brimley on Saturday.

A snowmobile, driven by 37-year-old Ian Galbraith of Sault Sainte Marie, was trying to cross Lakeshore Drive.  He pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle and was hit.

Galbraith and his five-year-old daughter, Kieleigh Gavi-Galbraith, were thrown from the sled.  Both were taken to War Memorial Hospital, where the girl passed away from her injuries.

Her father remains hospitalized, and his condition has not been released.

While the crash remains under investigation, alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
