ESCANABA -- More than one dozen horses involved in the animal neglect case in Delta County will soon be put for up for adoption instead of sale.
Tuesday, a motion hearing for 62-year-old Arnold Proehl, who was found guilty of animal abandoning and cruelty back in September, took place. Court officials wanted to address issues with ownership of horses found on Proehl's mother's property.
Proehl was banned from owning or possessing horses or to live on property where horses are present.
However, he claimed that he had sold his horses to his 85-year-old mother on February 3. But due to conflicting dates and testimony and no cash transaction, the judge felt the sale wasn't legitimate.
"Any horses not sold on or before February 15th, 2010 shall be taken at the direction of the Delta County Animal Control and thereafter placed for adoption."
The judge felt it would be better to put the horses up for adoption instead of further auction or sale, due to the decline in the market.
