BIG BAY -- This coming weekend, anglers from all over the U.P. will gather in Big Bay for a weekend of competitive fishing on Lake Independence.

It's the 30th annual Big Bay 550 Snowmobile Club's Fishing Derby.  Registration opens Saturday morning at 7 a.m. in Perkins Park.  Cost of registration is only $10 for adults and $1 for kids.

The club only holds one fund-raiser a year, and money raised goes to supporting the club's operating cost and trail grooming, but the event is also about having fun.

"They're all out there playing on the lake.  People are building snowmen and ice igloos or whatever, because the fish aren't biting real well these days," said Joe Cram, Club President.  "So they find something else to do, but it's a good time."

There are three categories:  pike, walleye, and perch.

Cash prizes for the largest fish are $100 for first, $50 for second, and $25 for third.
