MUNISING (AP) -- The annual Michigan Ice Fest takes place this weekend at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
The ice climbing festival begins Friday and runs through Sunday in Munising. Participants use ropes and special gear to ascend ice formations hanging over Pictured Rocks' fabled sandstone cliffs along Lake Superior.
The ice walls that climbers use resemble frozen waterfalls. They form as water seeps through tiny fissures in the cliffs along the Upper Peninsula shoreline. They're treacherous, offering few hand or foot supports.
Details about Michigan Ice Fest are available online.
