UPPER PENINSULA -- Due to a serious lack of funding, MDOT is delaying work on 243 road projects, statewide, over the next five years. This means about $2.5 billion worth of work won't be completed.
Of the roughly 1,800 miles of highway in the U.P., 139 miles had work scheduled to be done on them, but 32 miles of that work will not be done.
"Michigan projects...to be short in the next five years about $368 million that's used as matching funds for federal funding," explained James Lake of MDOT. "And if we're not able to match that federal funds, it means that $2.1 billion worth of federal funding for transportation will likely go to other states."
The earliest that the postponed work would next be considered is 2015.
