It was just two degrees, but that didn't hold back the skiers.

ISHPEMING -- It's time to break out those skis!

With the Noquemanon Ski Weekend almost upon us, Thursday, the city of Ishpeming was getting into the cross-country spirit with its annual Torchlight Trek.

The summertime smell of citronella filled the air, but don't let the aroma fool you.  It was cold out there!  Two degrees, in fact.  But that single-digit reading didn't stop Paul Olson and his daughter from coming out to Main Street.

"I probably don't enjoy the two degree temperatures as much as she does, but you know, we're Yoopers!  So we just have to bundle up and go outside in the cold weather or else we're never going to go outside at all!" said Olson.

While the kids skied lap after lap, the parents warmed up by the fire.

"The parents seem to be a little bit colder than the kids.  The kids are having a great time," said Bob Hendrickson, event organizer.

And the rules were simple:  just show up and ski.

"They can go as many times as they want, and then they're heading down to St. Onge's parking lot for hot dogs and hot chocolate and then they're picking up their T-shirt and their skiers' medallion down at Wilderness Sports, who's also providing free rentals today," Hendrickson added.

The 12th annual Torchlight Trek was sponsored by the Ishpeming Business Association, the Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, and a number of local businesses.
