NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- After a wintry start to the new year, the month of January has slowly been warming up to Upper Michigan--literally.
It has many people talking about the "January thaw." It's something that seems to happen every year, right around this time of winter. And with January running over six degrees above average so far despite the cold start, it would appear to be happening now.
"Right now, what we've seen is the average highs have been about three degrees above normal, on average. The average lows for the month so far have been almost 10 degrees above average," said Jason Alumbaugh, National Weather Service meteorologist. "That's what's really boosting our overall average for the month."
And it may stay a bit warmer than usual. A recent update of the three month outlook from the Climate Prediction Center has us more than likely above average during that time. But don't worry cold weather lovers. The temperatures are expected to drop back into the single digits later this week.
