Officials estimate over 400 Delta County residents and businesses donated to last year's Strong Kids Campaign.
ESCANABA -- For the past two decades, the YMCA's Strong Kids Campaign has helped fund memberships for hundreds of area youth and their families.
Well, this year's campaign is officially underway in Delta County and officials have high hopes.
Whether it's swimming lessons or sports like basketball, last year over 775 individuals and families were able to take part in YMCA programs through the Strong Kids Campaign. For a single mom like Kristina Fennell, the campaign is more than just a helping hand.
"My son loves it and he has learned so much," explained Fennell. "I am so grateful for this program because I don't know where else I'd be able to have him participate without paying through the roof because I just don't have the extra money."
And while hundreds of area youth like Fennell's son benefit from the campaign, don't let the name fool you. It helps those of all ages.
"It's called the Strong Kids Campaign, but really it helps youth, families and even seniors; individuals that need help," said Campaign Co-Chair, Caren Crawford.
Officials estimate over 400 local residents and businesses donated to last year's Strong Kids Campaign. They were able to raise over $95,000 and officials hope to do just as well this year.
"The response has been really great," Crawford said. "You know, when we call all the individuals and businesses, people know how important this campaign is to our community, and they're really willing to step forth and give what they can."
