LANSING (AP) -- A coalition of House and Senate Democrats say they're going to try again to end free, taxpayer-funded lifetime health care for state lawmakers starting at age 55 who serve at least six years.
Calling the perk "a lavish and unjustified expense" as Michigan struggles with tight budgets, the Democrats on Tuesday said they want to substitute a health care benefit more in line with what other workers receive.
They're not the only ones with moneysaving legislation.
Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop plans to explain to reporters Tuesday afternoon the changes Republicans want to reduce some of the costs of running school districts and local governments.
