Radon leads to lung cancer.
MARQUETTE COUNTY -- It's believed that every year, more than 15,000 lung cancer deaths occur in the United States because of exposure to radon gas.
January is National Radon Action month, so the Marquette County Health Department is raising awareness about the colorless, odorless gas.
They're selling test kits at the health department for $12, and now is the perfect time to test your home for dangerous levels of radon.
"It's a good time to test because the heating season is when you'll have the most radon in your home. As the hot air rises through your home, you'll be pulling soil gases into your home through the foundation, and also with your windows being closed up, it's a good time to test what actual levels of gases might exist in your home," said Patrick Jacuzzo of the Marquette County Health Department.
Republic Township in Marquette County has the highest radon levels in the state.
