HERMANSVILLE -- It's the day that shook America to its core.  Even though it took place more than eight years ago, September 11th still feels like just yesterday to some.  And one local community is trying to make sure it's never forgotten by bringing a piece of that day's history to the U.P.

The Twin Towers' collapse left an empty gap, not only in New York, but in the hearts of friends and families of those who lost their lives.  To help make sure they won't be forgotten, a "Twin Towers Memorial" project was started in Hermansville by local fire and emergency personnel.  The heart of that project lies with some recent news.

The small community will be receiving a small piece of steel from one of the World Trade Centers; an effort put on by the September 11th Families Association.

"The Journal of Emergency Medical Services had an article about the availability of some steel from the Twin Towers, and I noticed the article and thought it would be ideal to start a memorial in the little town of Hermansville," explained project coordinator, Bud Marsh.

Officials are now trying to raise money to help build the memorial which will be located in the park right off the highway.

"We'd like to raise $10,000; those are the initial funds for the building we have planned," explained project treasurer, Jack Korhonen.  "We've also talked to a couple other departments, passed out flyers to them to get them on board and to do their own fund-raisers for the Twin Towers Memorial."

Once the money is raised and the project completed, officials hope it'll shed new light on a tragic day in America's history.

"It's not just a piece of metal," Marsh said.  "It's a piece of history.  They'll be able to see a piece of history sitting in that building.  Hopefully it'll sink in to not only the kids, but also the adults that come in and see it in the building."

Marsh expects it'll take several months before the piece of steel arrives in Hermansville, but he does hope that they'll begin construction on the building by the spring and hopefully, host a grand opening for the memorial on the ninth anniversary of September 11th.
