Pinewood Derby races for Cub Scouts in Pack 308
MARQUETTE -- The cars were fast, the competition was fierce, and the emotions were running high. It was race day at the Father Marquette School for the Pinewood Derby and Cub Scout Pack 308.
Saturday some 50 Cub Scouts took their car creations and went head-to-head to see who was the fastest. These cars are hand-crafted from kits by the scouts and their parents. They have a month and a half to get the car race ready and it can't weigh more than five ounces, wheels and all. There's no altering the length or width of the block of wood you get as the car chassis.
This event needs team work if the scouts are looking to move on to district competition.
Brian Janowski, the father of one of the scouts said, "It's great to have a project we can work on together and to have a deadline and a specific challenge we're trying to reach. We're trying to make a nice, fast car and so we put a lot of thought about what we should do."
His son, Matthew, said, "We measured out the block and then we used a thing to measure how we want it to be curved so it gets good air flow."
Two winners from each of the five dens that competed Saturday go on to the District Finals, March 20, at St. Michael's Church in Marquette.
