GLADSTONE -- The snow and cold didn't deter some residents in Delta County from jumpstarting their New Year's resolution early.
Thursday afternoon was the annual New Year's Eve Resolution 5k Run/Walk in Gladstone. Those willing to take on the cold helped those less fortunate.
Seventy-year-old Dick Jenkins has been running for 30 years. He's taken part in this race since it started almost a decade ago, and he says it helps him jumpstart yet another health conscious year.
"It renews our, our running for the year, gets us started," explained Jenkins. "If we can get out here on a cold winter day, we can sure do it the rest of the days. It gives us all a chance to get out and enjoy the outdoors and feel good about it."
But kicking off the year on the right foot isn't the only reason why local runners take part. The annual New Year's Eve Resolution Run is just one of three holiday races put on in Delta County by Gladstone resident Dan Paul each year.
In every race, runners are asked to bring either food or donate money as an entrance fee to give to the local Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul. Wanting to help those in need is what got it all started.
"We all thought, you know, what we could give back to the community as far as helping, and the races, run/walks, generate a lot of food and also monetary contributions," said Paul.
Paul is even spreading the cheer into a neighboring county.
"We also have three races down in the Menominee area which is a Trilogy Run, which also raises money for the St. Vincent De Paul down there as well," Paul explained.
With all three races combined this year, more than a thousand pounds of food has been donated to the local Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul, along with nearly $600. Paul hopes that next year's races will be just as successful.
