Legislation will benefit local charities as well.
HOUGHTON -- The wheels of generosity will continue to turn at the Good Will Farm in Houghton now that a new bill has been signed, extending the current tax credit program which was set to end this year.
The charity has given away dozens of donated vehicles through their Wheels Program over the past eight years, and Executive Director Mark Lambert thinks this kind of incentive can only help their efforts.
"Unfortunately, like everything else, the need is much greater," said Lambert. "We have about 40 applications of people who would like to have a car right now, but we only have about eight or nine in the shop."
People who donate their used vehicle to the Wheels Program or other charities can claim a state income tax credit of up to $50 for the value of their car. Of course they'll also enjoy knowing that their old vehicle is helping someone who really needs it.
"The people we give to are usually single parents and they need to just be able to drive their kids to the doctors and school and themselves to work," Lambert said.
