Amber Roth became interested in Golden Wing Warblers more than a decade ago.

HOUGHTON -- A graduate student at Michigan Tech has made it her mission to protect a migratory songbird native to the Midwest.

Amber Roth became interested in Golden Wing Warblers more than a decade ago.  Long before anyone realized that the population of tiny birds was steadily declining.

Now, as a part of the International Golden Wing Warbler Working Group, Roth and other researchers are studying feathers and breeding habits to see how they might preserve the species.

"They contribute to the biodiversity that we see and if we continue to lose species like this, we're losing parts of the ecosystem but also lost that enjoyment," Roth says.

Michigan Tech has supported Roth's efforts by donating 21 mists nets to help researchers in Central and South America safely capture the birds to study in their winter habitat.
