Researchers have discovered a new link between the predator-prey relationship of wolves and moose.
HOUGHTON -- Michigan Tech researchers have discovered a new link between the predator-prey relationship of wolves and moose.
Dr. Joseph Bump and two other researchers from Michigan Tech spent five years studying the predator-prey relationship between wolves and moose on Isle Royale.
As the team focused on learning more about these animals, they discovered an interesting connection between wolf-killed moose carcasses and nutrient "hot spots" in the surrounding soil.
"It's surprising that a carcass, which is a prized resource and is well-utilized, leads to these strong soil effects and plant responses," said Tech researcher Dr. Bump.
Dr. Bump's findings are published in the current issue of Ecology. He says the group will do more research on how changes in wolf behavior will further affect this connection.
