Decorating competition raises hundreds of dollars.
L'ANSE -- Holiday spirit in the village of L’Anse has inspired goodwill in people far across the country.
This year the village donated 24 Christmas trees to local businesses to participate in the town’s first ever decorating competition.
The trees were decorated by individuals as well as local organizations, many choosing themes such as candy, pets, American flags and ribbons and bows.
People are asked to donate 25 cents to vote for their favorite. But some people are willing to pay a little extra to vote for the Red Hat tree in front of Oralies clothing store.
On Wednesday morning, a woman in Florida sent a $500 check to pay for her vote.
"I was so thrilled the other day when we got a $10 donation, but now we have a $500 vote,” said Susie Pressline, a member of the “Yooper Girls” who decorated the tree. “I can't believe it."
The voting continues through Christmas Eve. All of the proceeds will go to St. Vincent de Paul in L’Anse.
The village has already collected several hundred dollars from the competition.
