Declared from Russia 1917

ISHPEMING -- A nationality that's well known in Upper Michigan celebrated its independence Sunday.

The Republic of Finland declared its independence from Russia on December 6, 1917.

On Sunday, people gathered at the Ishpeming Elks Lodge to celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the occasion.

For many, it's become an important tradition in Finnish culture.

"Well, I think it is to honor our heritage and who we are as a people and to celebrate the contribution that Finnish-Americans have made to the nation," said Pastor Rudolph Kemppainen.

Sunday's observance featured music, prayer, and guest speakers.
