Small retail shops offer discounts to compete with the big box stores.

MARQUETTE COUNTY -- There were steals and deals everywhere Friday.

Unique Treasures in the Country Village, Ishpeming, opened two hours early on Black Friday, hoping to attract shoppers coming and going from the big retailers.

In Marquette, the streets were quiet, but certainly not empty.

Shops in both downtown Marquette and Ishpeming were pleased with the day after Thanksgiving turnout.

"Black Friday really does belong to the big box stores, but later in the afternoon, shoppers come downtown," said Leslie White of Leslie's House.

"I think as long as you have specials going on, it does draw people into the store," said Donna VanStraten of Unique Treasures, "and we've done pretty well."

One way these stores make themselves stand out to shoppers throughout the holiday season is by offering various specials that can't be found anywhere else.
