Hunters see fewer deer in the woods this year.

CORNELL TOWNSHIP -- Sunday was a big day in Upper Michigan.  It was the opening day of the firearm deer season.

Although hunters are reporting seeing fewer deer in the woods, some managed to bag a buck on the first day.

Bob Gasparick saw only one doe Sunday morning by his camp near Cornell.

"It was a quiet morning, there wasn't much going on at all,” said Bob.  “The wind, I think, it just kind of had them spooked and everything."

Down the road, there were no deer on the buck pole at K and L camp Sunday morning.

"Considering the fact that we've been hearing wolves at night, I say we would be attributing it to wolves," said Terry LaVallie.

But at the deer check station at the Rusty Rail south of Cornell, there was a steady number of bucks coming in.  Karen Whitney of Gladstone got a seven point buck.

"I saw one doe this morning,” said Karen, “was getting ready to come in because it was awful cold and saw my seven pointer come walking straight in to the bait pile, and he was eating and I took one shot."

Marc LaBeau found his buck in the St. Nicolas area.

"He came wandering in about nine o'clock in the morning,” said Marc, “came across the field chasing a doe and I managed to hit him, and actually got him a second time, actually put him down.  So it was a pretty exciting hunt this morning."

But as hunters know, deer season is not just about bagging a buck.

"We always enjoy deer camp,” Terry added.  “Deer or no deer, we always, always enjoy deer camp."
