Marquette company proves big business doesn't need big city
MARQUETTE -- With the growth of the Internet comes the shrinking of our planet. After all, global communication is now just a mouse click away.
Stang Decision Systems is a Marquette-based company in business to help its clients find the best possible candidate for a job opening. They're responsible for over 10,000 job placements to date.
Spencer Stang is a Marquette native and the owner of Stang Decision Systems. When he realized he could run his company from his hometown, he jumped on it.
"We actually started in Milwaukee. In 2001, I opened in Milwaukee; we were there for about three-and-a-half years. My wife and I had our first child, realized that Marquette was a great place to raise a family, so packed up the business and moved here," explained Stang.
Stang Decision Systems is a national company, with offices in Lansing, Minneapolis and St. Louis. But because it's so reliant on the Internet, the home base doesn't have to be in a big city. From Marquette--and the comforts of his hometown--Stang serves Marathon, Anheuser Busch and the New York Jets, just to name a few.
"It is a nice sector for individuals that have the skills and perhaps want to live in a different location than New York, LA or Chicago," says Lois Ellis, VP of Economic Development at the Lake Superior Community Partnership.
TriMedia Consultants is an engineering firm located right here in Marquette. In the past two years, they've utilized Stang's services to fill 11 employment vacancies.
"It's worked out great. I guess the cat's out of the bag. This is a great resource here. But I think we have a significant leg-up competing for top talent," said Tom Anthos, President of TriMedia.
I asked Stang about the old adage "location, location, location". Is it still true, or is the Internet actually shrinking the globe? He offered this:
"Well it's still location, location, location in terms of live where you want to live, work where you want to work."
