The menu and nutritional value have changed, but students still enjoy school lunches.
MUNISING -- For students, it's probably one of their favorite periods of the school day. The traditional hot school lunch has been around for many years, but the menu items have changed to become as healthy as possible.
"We have attempted to serve healthier--less sodium, less fat, more fruits and vegetables, more healthy snacks. We've done away with any junk food snacks; skim milk we've offered, and we've also offered healthier breakfasts as well," stated Munising High School's Director of Auxiliary Services, Phil DeGabriele.
Each lunch offers a choice of meat, veggies, fruit, bread and milk. For vegetarians, there are always alternatives.
Many schools are also trying to use less processed foods and more home cooked meals instead, like a specially prepared mac and cheese, which is a favorite among students.
"It's my favorite because I don't know what Phyllis does about it, but it's so cheesy and I just love it," said senior student Nick Hase.
Not only is the food healthier, but the beverage selection is as well. Kids have the choice of milk, juice, or water...no pop will be sold in school cafeterias.
And despite the lack of junk food, students are still satisfied with the lunches.
"They're tasty. We get a lot of choices. I also dig the mac and cheese. It's tasty. I was upset we didn't have it today. We got chicken noodle soup though. That's tasty," said sophomore Keegan Nebel.
One thing that hasn't changed too much is the price. For just three dollars, it's a hard deal to beat.
