County health departments in the U.P. await backorder refills.
MARQUETTE -- County health departments across the U.P. have postponed seasonal flu clinics for now due to a shortage of vaccines.
New supplies should be coming within the month, but there is no guarantee on the backorders.
Private businesses and pharmacies that do their own seasonal flu vaccine program, like Target and Walgreen, may also be out of the vaccine, but their resupply orders change each day.
The Superior Walk-In Clinic ran out of the seasonal flu vaccine on Wednesday and nurses say they will not be getting any more.
"We didn't anticipate we would run out. We always order a little more every year; this year we ran out, last year we still had some left over after the clinic," said Registered Nurse Terry Patterson. "But I think with all the news media talking about the H1N1 flu and the seasonal flu that more people decided to get their flu shot this year."
Patterson said washing your hands frequently is the most effective way to protect yourself from the flu virus.
If you still want a flu shot, she said to check with your primary care physician to see if they know where more shots might be available.
