Bay College CAD team builds tee and submits to Guiness Book of World Records
ESCANABA -- At 26 feet long and weighing in at almost a ton, it looks like the computer-aided design has created the world's largest golf tee.
This morning, judges were on hand to take the official measurements and submit them to the Guiness Book of World Records. To qualify, the tee, which is made of pine, must meet certain requirements.
"It has to pass three measurements: the length of it, the diameter of the head, and the diameter of the shaft. It also has to be made out of the same material that the original tee was made out of," said team leader Gary Moore.
After the measurements were taken, the tee was lined with I-beams and lifted by a crane into the ground--an impressive sight to say the least.
"It was an awesome feeling. It was just hard work that we put into it and it was just very, very deserved. Seeing it go in was just an amazing feeling," said team member Joe Whitens.
But the fun didn't end there.
Two time U.P. Open winner, Brian Robinette, took the first swing off of the large tee..which wasn't an easy task.
"I just kind of made the best swing I could by standing in the bucket. Obviously being that high in the air kind of changes your mentality a little bit," said Robinette.
The tee will stay at the Escanaba Country Club for the next week. After that it will be auctioned off with the proceeds going toward charity.
