School programs helps out children.

IRON MOUNTAIN -- Rising prices have put a strain on a lot of parents when it comes to finding nutritious meals for their families.  The Bishop Baraga Catholic School in Iron Mountain is doing their part to help by providing free meals for area children.

School may be over for the year, but kids are still hitting the lunch line at the North Elementary School. The best part is that all of the food is free for school-age children in the area and is provided by the Bishop Baraga Catholic School.

"No income requirement at all; everyone is welcome," said head cook Bernadette Larson.  "We're just very happy to have this program because of the current economy."

The program is funded by the state, and this is the third year that the school has offered it.  It doesn't just ease the burden for parents, either.  It also provides the kids with nutritious food twice a day.

"They have lots of vegetables and they're one of my favorite foods," said Trevor Newman, one of the kids who takes part in the program.

It also helps children build social skills as they interact with one another.

The free meals work in conjunction with North Elementary's summer day care program.  However, you don't have to have a child enrolled in day care in order to participate in the meal program.  In fact, they're encouraging more families to take part.

"We can serve up to 200 children if need be or more," Larson said.

The free meal program runs through the end of August at North and Central Elementary Schools.  Breakfast times are 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
