Restaurant offers special prices for troubled times.

NORWAY -- Many restaurants have closed over the span of the last year due to today's troubled times.  However, 61 percent of people in America are still going out to eat an average of once every two weeks.

To compensate for rising prices, one Norway bar and grill has turned to creative measures in order to bring in business.  Part of it is local allure--at the Thirsty Whale, people come in partly for the friendly faces that know them on a first-name basis.

"I like the people, the food is great, the atmosphere is awesome," said Jennifer Nagy, one of the establishment's long-time patrons.  "It's just a lot of fun for everyone."

They also come in for some of the lowest prices in town.

"Basically, I think it started when the Niagara Mill shut down and we were thinking, 'Oh, this is so close to home; we need to do something to keep business and keep people coming in," said Thirsty Whale owner, Paula Pieropon.

Their solution?  A menu that they call the "Stimulus Package".  It consists of burgers and sandwiches that are offered daily for as low as less than $3.00.

Nagy agrees with the strategy.  "I think it really helps out the community.  People can still go out and have a good meal, and it's cheap."

Pieropon said that she has noticed an increase in business since she started offering the specials last year.  However, that's not her main reason for offering such low prices.

"We're a very community-minded bar and I think that's what separates us in some way," she said.

The Thirsty Whale also boasts three outdoor volleyball courts which cater to local players and bring in the customers.  This year, 36 teams are competing, which is the most they've ever had.

In addition to physical activity, there's also another bar area by the courts and they've recently started grilling out for the players.

So, despite some of the economic turmoil the area has seen, it's still possible to go out with friends for some fun and food that won't break your budget.
