It was the 2nd Annual Miners Memorial Day.
NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- On Monday, Americans honored our nation's fallen servicemen and women, and on Sunday, U.P. residents at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum remembered those who perished in the 1926 Barnes-Hecker Mine disaster.
It was the 2nd Annual Miners Memorial Day Observance.
The cave-in at the Barnes-Hecker Mine claimed 51 lives and is said to be Michigan's worst mining accident.
Just four days after the tragedy, Reverend Lewis Keast spoke with mourners. His sermon was recited at the event.
"I think his theology is very similar to mine and it would have been a sermon that I think I, myself, would of preached had I been there and the disaster had occurred, " said Reverend Robert Dobson. "I've enjoyed reading it and I've enjoyed delivering it."
The reading on Sunday was the first time the sermon had been heard in public since November 7, 1926.
