Hybrid safety

Hybrid vehicles are packing up to 300 extra volts, meaning added risk if they're involved in an accident.

MARQUETTE -- For first responders from throughout the U.P., it was a lesson in safety Wednesday night.  Though hybrids are very similar to traditional vehicles, there are some differences in responding to accidents that could mean the difference between life and death.

"There's this tremendous amount of electrical energy," explained MGH Dr. James Surrell.  "It's coursing through some color-coated cables and you need to know these little things about hybrids because of the potential electrical danger to the victim of the accident and the rescuer alike."

Not only does a hybrid carry a standard 12 volt battery under the hood, it also packs up to 300 extra volts in another battery located under the back set.  That's why officials stressed the importance of never cutting the brightly colored orange and blue cables because of the high risk of electric shock.

"By the logos on the vehicle, if it's a hybrid, we've got to make sure the key is out of the ignition," explained Escanaba Township Fire Chief Dave Vanderlinden.  "We've got to disable the 12 volt system and keep away from the electrical components."

Another issue--hybrid engines are quiet.  You may not even realize it's still running.

"A hybrid vehicle will totally shut the engine off, but it could spontaneously start at anytime," Dr. Surrell explained.  "If it calls for power, it can turn the engine on and if it's in gear, it can lurch forward and injure someone."

It will take some extra time assessing an accident scene with a hybrid vehicle.  But those in attendance know it's well worth it if everyone makes it out safely.
