Habitat for Humanity is looking for community support.
DICKINSON COUNTY -- Habitat For Humanity's mission is to help those in need, however, in today's economy, they're looking for help from the community. More people are applying for assistance due to the economy, but less funding and volunteer aid is taking its toll.
Over the years, Habitat For Humanity has built over 300,000 homes, but now the Menominee River branch is having trouble keeping up with the demand.
"From what we see as far as the number of families applying through Habitat, it's probably up 25 percent," said Bill Stephenson, executive director.
They are looking for more funding through grants and donations so they can produce more houses.
"We are trying to increase our house productivity from two to three up to four to five over the next year to two," Stephenson said.
Money isn't the whole issue, however. The houses don't get built without volunteers to help with the construction.
"Those counts are really down this year," said volunteer coordinator Diana Bancroft. "We think it's because of the economy, because of the price of gas and people just aren't traveling as much as they used to."
They are encouraging the community to get involved, whether it's helping with construction or assisting in their Restore.
