MARQUETTE -- When it comes to public safety, law enforcement officers are trained to act fast.

U.P. law enforcement officers recently got a lesson in weapons management at Northern Michigan University.

Trainers spoke on how to use different force methods for different situations.  Officials say weapons and deadly force are always a last resort.

"We also have protective actions--how if someone's violently assaulting me, how we use punches and kicks, elbows and knees.  How we use different body parts in violent situations," said trainer Gary Klugiewicz.

The trainers say depending on state mandates, officers receive between 12 and 24 weeks of training before hitting the streets.
