Iron Mountain city council update

IRON MOUNTAIN -- It's been exactly a year since Iron Mountain's city council made headlines for their recall initiatives and in-fighting.  Since that time, council members have changed and new city government officials have joined the team.

Two members were recalled and one had to fight to keep his position.  The Iron Mountain city council and its members have been through a lot over the last year.

"One of the pamphlets going around about me, a gentleman walked up, a guy in his fifties walked up and handed the pamphlet to my ten-year-old little daughter and told her to tell daddy to choke on this," said Ward Three council member Dan Burke, who was on the recall list.

On top of that, controversial former city manager John Marquart left Iron Mountain to take a position in Illinois.

So how are they getting along now?

"Most councils don't agree on everything," said new city manager Jordan Stanchina, "so it's just part of the process, but at the end of the day, just agree to disagree on it."

The council is trying to move forward with plans to improve the city's economic climate with the use of tax increment financing authority, or TIFA, dollars.

"In a budget meeting Tuesday night, however, it was proven that the council is still having its issues.  Councilwoman Tina Peterson told other members that she verbally resigned.

Peterson told TV6 that she has changed her mind about resigning and that she, "Let my frustrations get the best of me and I shouldn't have done that."

In addition, council by-laws stipulate that resignations be put in writing.

'You have to file notice with the city clerk," Stanchina explained.  "That's what it says."

"We're trying to get along as best we can, you know, but sometimes it's hard," Burke said.

So once again, the council is trying to put the past behind them and look toward the future.
