The Ballet Folklorico “Quetzalli” de Veracruz will bring a Latin twist to the art form.

MARQUETTE -- Stepping to the sounds of old Mexico in native dress, dance troupe, the Ballet Folklorico "Quetzalli" de Veracruz, can easily charm any crowd with their vibrant performances.

"The materials we received from the group is just very exciting, and the dances are fantastic,” exclaimed the director of the U.P. Beaumier Heritage Center, Daniel Truckey.  “The costumes are great. The music's wonderful.  It's a really exciting show."

Their combination of traditional Mexican folk dances and music convinced Truckey that this group would be the perfect conclusion to NMU’s annual “International Performing Arts” series.

"Part of the series is to bring other cultures to Marquette so people can get an exposure to people from Mexico and their music and dance,” Truckey explained.  He added that this series is in addition to other recent initiatives pushed by the university to begin internationalizing their curriculum and campus.

Through this upcoming performance, he hopes students and residents alike will get to see the full extent of Mexico's cultural diversity.  "They will be performing dances from the history of Mexico going back to the Native American population dances right up to contemporary folk dance in Mexico,” Truckey said.

Those interested in experiencing the Ballet Folklorico “Quetzalli” de Veracruz can see them perform at Kaufman Auditorium on Wednesday, April 22, at 8 p.m. and even participate in their free dance workshop at 10 a.m. that morning in the Great Lakes Room at NMU’s University Center.
