Locals are making sure area food pantry shelves are stocked.
ESCANABA -- Despite the economy, area residents are making sure that those in need don't go hungry.
Officials at the Salvation Army in Escanaba say their food pantry shelves are overflowing. Currently, they have about 15,000 pounds of food, which is above average, and officials say the donations keep coming in.
Last year, the Salvation Army helped 5,000 people in Delta County, and they expect to be over that number this year.
Officials are confident they'll have more than enough food with all the donations to last them until their next big food drive in a May.
"It just amazes me," said Major Bill Cox of the Salvation Army. "I think it's the U.P. people--we rally to help fill the needs. We're honest with each other, and we tell you what we need and they rally."
Officials estimate they hand out about 5,000 pounds of food each month.
