City gaining ground in McClellan Avenue extension project.
MARQUETTE -- Since 2001, the City of Marquette has been working to extend McClellan from Wright Street to Fair Avenue.
On Monday, the Marquette City Commission voted to purchase one of the three remaining properties, despite some public opposition.
"Deny the desires of the few trucking companies for a truck route through a residential neighborhood," said Marquette resident Gordon Peterson.
The property located on 1408 West Avenue is needed to create a north-south route through the City of Marquette.
The price for the property is $14,700 and included in the purchase agreement is a 82 foot by 50 foot tree buffer between the property owner's home and the proposed right-of-way.
"I had our staff go out and look at that and see if there would be problems in the future of preserving that tree buffer area," says City Manager Judy Akkala, "and they got back to me and said there was no problem with that."
Mayor John Kivela said he was happy that the project was making progress.
"I will move to support this," stated Kivela. "City manager, you did a fine job negotiating this."
There are a total of eight properties needed to extend McClellan from Fair Avenue to Wright Street.
The city still has two remaining property owners to negotiate with before it acquires all the the land it needs for the proposed north-south route.
